-Check out the WIP- ...Phewwwww.
Painting my favorite character from "Super Mario RPG" turned out to be quite a challenge - would it be easy for anyone to make a Spear android look metallic
without using metallic paint? Even I couldn't do that only with acrylics, so had to use also color pencils.
Anyway, here's one more Yaridovich (or rather, three - the original one and two "morphs"). My countryman. Not a boss or a villain to fight, but an ally of the Mushroom World this time.
[And now, prepare for a PHILOLOGICAL TEXTWALL...]I remember I promised to tell more about Yaridovich's name - so here we go.

MarioWiki explains his name quite simply:
yari is a Japanese word for "spear", which he was based on (a
bishamon yari, to be precise - they in fact have two crescent-shaped sideblades parallel to the long central one). The wiki also shortly states that it resembles a Russian patronym.
And even although it's unknown if the game developers mean his name to sound Russian or simply slapped a first random suffix onto it - in many Slavic languages in fact exists a stem
*yar (or
*jar) with meanings that suit him pretty much. Being a philologist, I simply couldn't miss such a piece to study...
Old Church Slavonic
jarŭ (яръ) means "severe" or "furious"; its Russian derivative
járost' (ярость) means "rage" or "frenzy".
(Gamers, remembered fighting him in the Seaside Town?)Only two negative meanings. And how many positive ones?
Slovenian
járǝn, Polish (archaic) and Russian (not so archaic)
jary or
yary means "spry", "young", "eager", "strong".
(Don't know what's about "young", but "eager and strong", he surely is.) Russian
járkij (яркий) means "bright".
) Serbian
jа̏rа - "furnace heat", Polish
jarzyć się - "to shine"
(self-explanatory as well, I think), Old Russian
jaro - "sun".
Yar- or
Jar- with a meaning "strong" are prefixes of many Slavic names - both archaic
(Jaropełk, Jarogniew, Jaromir) and not
(Yaroslav).
[/PHILOLOGICAL TEXTWALL]...That's it. Hope now you understand why I don't portray him as a villain. With such a name, remaining evil for long is
impossible.
Acrylics, color pencils, A4 watercolor paper.
Yaridovich (C) Nintendo / Square
I don't know if you still do or already not, but still, I'd like to apologise in his name. Yes, apologise, no matter how silly it may sound. Because, as a fan of Smithy Gang (but not Smithy himself), I simply can't believe they could be this evil by themselves.
I've seen few deviations that depict Yarid as a nice being, and although it's tough to see at first, I know that with the right chain of events, someone from the "dark side" can help out the heroes. ^^ Just kind of difficult here since this guy is tacked into my childhood memories as being one heck of a pain in the neck. I can get over it for a moment when I see something like this though.
Hmm... I think the whole "evil" thing was just hardwired into them. A little re-wiring and they'd be pretty neutral, at least. Makes ya wonder how the adventure could have gone if a tech pro went along with the crew.
You don't have to apologize. He was doing his job, right?
(This was written late at night so I'm sorry if this seems at all awkward.)
Maybe... He in fact managed to KO me one time, but I was a beginner and didn't know about the armor, so it doesn't count. And next time he ran out of the FP first in, like, four minutes...

I personally doubt as for "hardwired": if there's an evil side, there must be its counterpart - even in another dimention... After all, the legends about weapons and the reverence they were treated with don't exist for nothing. Do you know about Amenonuhoko, for example? The spear which - as a Japanese legend says - helped two deities create the first land? And everyone surely remember countless swords of the noble knights they protected their homeland with...
So I'd rather suppose they were possessed by Smithy's power - for some time. Almost like in Geno's case, only in a negative way.
And after Smithy is defeated, they no more belong to him. Which means they can correct their own mistakes.
As for hating him, I'm sorry, but I won't ever completely stop disliking Yary.
'S okay, I'm still glad this disliking reduced at least a little.
And this very disliking, by the way, helped me to write a story about the Factory (and Yari's, of course) past.
That has to be the one saving grace in that fight. Last long enough and he'll have no FP for Water Blast.

I agree on the counterpart and alternate dimension bits. Makes sense to me. ^_^ Sorry, but I don't know about Amenonuhoko. I'm not into mythologies concerning weapons. It seems like an interesting story though.
Hmm. Possessed, eh? That makes sense to some degree when compared to Geno (although the difference is that the doll was never alive to begin with and the machines were). A bit weird to consider at first, but I like the idea that they could fix things.

Cool.
